Porsche releases 2019 718 Cayman T, 718 Boxster Tby Ronan Glon
Both models get a 300-horsepower flat-four.
Driving enthusiasts swooned over the Porsche 911 Carrera T. The German firm is applying the same treatment to the smaller, 718-badged Boxster and Cayman models. Both 718 Ts will reach showrooms for the 2019 model year.
Porsche explains T means "touring." To that end, the 718 Ts are purist-oriented models designed to provide driving enjoyment on a winding road, not to set a new lap record around the 'Ring. Visually, they stand out thanks to 20-inch alloy wheels painted gray, gray mirror shells, model-specific decals on the bottom of both doors, and black exhaust outlets that stick out from the middle of the rear bumper.
The inside is more basic than in other models. There are fabric door pulls, for example, and Porsche replaced the infotainment system with a large storage compartment. In Europe, deleting the unit offsets the weight added by the gasoline particulate filter. Buyers can add the infotainment system back to the car at no extra charge.
Power comes from a turbocharged, 2.0-liter flat-four engine tuned to provide 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Considering the T is aimed at purists, it comes as no surprise that the four-cylinder channels its power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. The sprint from zero to 62 mph takes 5.1 seconds, and top speed checks in at 170 mph. The available dual-clutch automatic gearbox lowers that first figure to 4.7.
Porsche lowered the suspension and made it firmer to improve handling. Every 718 T comes standard with the Sport Chrono package, which adds -- among other features -- four driver-selectable driving modes called Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual.
The 2019 Porsche 718 Boxster T and 718 Cayman T are on-sale now in Germany. Pricing starts at 63,047 euros for the hardtop and 65,070 euros for the drop-top, figures that convert to about $72,000 and $74,000, respectively. Pricing for the American-spec Ts will be released closer to their market launch.
