As President Barack Obama traded in his Chrysler 300 on a Ford Escape Hybrid, it should come as no surprise that the President wanted a more fuel efficient option for his motorcade. However, as the President recently revealed, his idea was quickly shot down.

In a recent interview with ABC News, President Obama revealed that he originally requested that his Presidential limousine feature a fuel efficient hybrid drivetrain. Although a greener drivetrain may have helped with the President's image, the Secret Service clipped the idea for obvious reasons.

"I asked can we make these cars hybrids," President Obama said. "Secret Service said no. Now, the reason is not because Secret Service are bad guys. It's because the cars that I'm in are like tanks."

He elaborated: "They just couldn't get the performance in terms of acceleration using a hybrid engine."

While the President's limo may look like a Cadillac, it is believed to be based on one of General Motors' medium-duty truck platforms. And although GM does offer a two-mode hybrid system in its full-size trucks, the system just isn't capable of a high-speed getaway involving a 10,000+ vehicle - not to mention the added concerns of having so many electronics onboard. Needless to say, the days of hybrid-powered Presidential limos are probably still a good ways off.
