Detroit LIVE: 2018 BMW X2by Byron Hurd
BMW's newest "Sports Activity Coupe" is here.
Despite the name, this particular "coupe"-style crossover boasts conspicuously hatchback-like proportions, making it a more practical take on the concept than some of its siblings.
Next to the X1 SAV on which the new X2 is based, it appears more truncated and less reminiscent of BMW's larger sport utilities. The rear window area does not extend beyond the X2's c-pillar (not so of the X1) and models equipped with the M Sport X also boast "Frozen Gray" body cladding to further differentiate it.
Oddly, this two-toned look reminds us of BMW's original 1-Series and its "sow's belly" character lines. We doubt this is the resemblance BMW was hoping to achieve, but nonetheless, it's hard for us to un-see it.
Being a derivative of the X1 means it ultimately shares its architecture with BMW's group subcompacts--namely the MINI lineup--and is fundamentally a front-wheel-drive vehicle. This xDrive28i is all-wheel-drive and appears to be the only configuration available at launch. At 3,600 pounds, it's not exactly tiny, but that's certainly on the lower end for a BMW.
The standard engine is a TwinPower four-cylinder producing 228 horsepower and 258lb-ft of torque and it's paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission (and the aforementioned xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive). BMW says the combo is good for a 6.3-second 0-60 run, and we expect real-world numbers to come out a tad more aggressive. The M Sport X package adds a sport transmission tune, a sport suspension and and unique 20-inch wheels for those who want the most performance-oriented model available.
Inside, the X2's cabin is fairly standard fare. The models included in BMW's gallery appear to be European-market exclusives, so we're not certain how much will come over. Body-colored dash accents are shown here, as well as a Frozen Gray insert to mark the M Sport X model. The visible paddle shifters are also part of the M Sport bundle.
As it is being launched as a 2018 model, we expect the X2 to hit dealer lots before the end of the year.
