Al Gore, Alan Mulally under consideration for Tesla chairman?

The company must find a new chairman during CEO Elon Musk's three-year ban.

Tesla's board of directors has reportedly drafted a short list of potential candidates to step in as chairman.

A settlement agreement between CEO Elon Musk and the Securities and Exchange Commission requires him to step down as chairman. The company must add two independent board members, ostensibly tasked with reining in Musk's Twitter activity.

A Bloomberg report suggests the board is considering former Vice President Al Gore, former Ford CEO Alan Mulally or Boeing's Jim McNerney.

Some investors view an independent chairman as a necessary change to help stabilize the company's stock price. Other experts doubt the SEC's settlement will have much of a change, as Musk is considered deeply integral to the company and consequently faces little pressure to fall in line.

Musk has been barred from serving as Tesla's chairman for three years.
