Elon Musk blasts 60 Minutes for 'misleading edit'

"This was accurate as viewed from an Upper East Side Manhattan dinner party," he says.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has criticized 60 Minutes for allegedly making 'misleading' cuts to his recent interview with host Lesley Stahl.

The dispute centers around Musk's seemingly nonchalant attitude about his settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which bars him from serving as chairman for a few years.

"Elon Musk had to step down as Tesla's chair. So did he lose power? He handpicked his successor, and when asked about her watching over him, he says: 'That's not realistic... I'm the largest shareholder in the company.' Does he want to be chair again? 'No,'" 60 Minutes wrote on a Twitter post teasing a clip from the interview.

Musk fired back, arguing that "this is a very misleading edit" and calling on the show to post the full transcript "where I complete the sentence."

The longer 60 Minutes interview video provides a bit more context when Musk points out that he is the largest shareholder in the company. It cuts the response, however, after he says "I call for a shareholder vote and get anything done that I want."

The executive claims he went on to say "provided I have the support of the shareholders" and his comments about the chairman role were also taken out of context. Rather than allowing someone else to stay on as chairman, the company will simply retire the title in three years when the terms of the SEC settlement are fulfilled.

"60 Mins actually had several hours of interview time, which they distilled to 14 mins. Many stories could been told with that time," he added. "This was accurate as viewed from an Upper East Side Manhattan dinner party."
