Tesla aims to reveal pickup prototype in 2019
"I'm dying to make a pickup truck so bad," says Elon Musk.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is apparently continuing to elevate the company's pickup development project to a higher priority.
"I'm dying to make a pickup truck so bad," he wrote on Twitter. "We might have a prototype to unveil next year."
The executive previously indicated the all-electric pickup would have "crazy torque," dual-motor all-wheel drive, and a suspension system that dynamically adjusts when hauling cargo in the bed. Workers will also have a 240-volt power hookup for running industrial equipment, such as welders, from the truck's battery.
The company is currently working to bring the Model Y crossover onto the market as early as 2020, suggesting the production pickup will not arrive until 2021 or later.
Tesla's Model 3 has quickly become one of the best-selling sedans in the US market. The sedan segment has been waning in recent years, however, as buyers shift toward high-riding vehicles. A pickup will take direct aim at the current best-selling car in America, the Ford F-150.
