Tesla Roadster augmented Autopilot to 'enhance driving ability'

\"Like a flying metal suit, but in car form,\" promises Elon Musk.

Tesla is apparently working on a new performance-focused Autopilot mode for the upcoming Roadster.

Elon Musk's latest Twitter announcement highlights an Augmented Mode that will "massively enhance human driving ability." The executive likens the system to Iron Man's flying metal suit "but in car form."

The comments might be hinting at a technology that allows human drivers to push the car's limits under manual control, but with automated interventions that prevent the car from entering a tight corner with too much speed.

Another possibility is a head-up display that could help a driver find the best line and braking points on a track.

Definitely. Will also have Augmented Mode that will massively enhance human driving ability. Like a flying metal suit, but in car form …

Musk has also indicated the next-gen Roadster could integrate rocket technology as an optional upgrade package. The executive did not elaborate but could be hinting at grid fins, borrowed from the SpaceX Falcon rockets, to help manage downforce or provide lateral force in corners.

Tesla expects to begin selling the new Roadster in 2020, after the Model Y arrives on the market.

Not saying the next gen Roadster special upgrade package *will* definitely enable it to fly short hops, but maybe …

Certainly possible. Just a question of safety. Rocket tech applied to a car opens up revolutionary possibilities.
