Tesla rules out motorcycle

It\'s personal, not business.

Electric cars get a lot of attention, but the electric motorcycle segment has been booming in the shadows for the past several years. Tesla has indicated it won't join companies like Harley-Davidson in the growing segment.

"We're not going to do motorcycles," said company co-founder and CEO Elon Musk during an annual shareholder meeting.

His comments end occasional rumors claiming Tesla would enter the segment sooner or later. Designer Jans Slapins released a widely-shared rendering of a two-wheeler named Model M (pictured) in 2015 to explore what a Tesla two-wheeler could look like.

It's personal, not business. Musk explained he rode dirt bikes as a kid and switched to road bikes in his teenage years. He stopped riding at 17, when a truck almost killed him, and hasn't looked back since. He didn't provide details about the accident but hinted he hasn't been on a bike in nearly 30 years.

Even without a motorcycle, Tesla has its work cut out for the next few years. It's still trying to mass-produce the Model 3, it's planning to introduce a smaller crossover named Model Y next year, and it's working on a semi truck. It also wants to bring a next-generation Roadster model to production.
