Tesla shows first teaser for Model Y crossover

The Y is expected to enter production as early as late 2019, built upon an entirely new platform.

Tesla has released its first official teaser image for the upcoming Model Y crossover.

The darkened render provides a preview of Tesla's styling and proportions for the front end. The high-riding model will apparently have a more traditional appearance than the Model 3, without the sedan's bulbous curved fenders.

As demand for crossovers continues to surge, Tesla believes the Model Y will likely outsell the Model 3. The company initially expected to start with the 3's platform, but later decided to start from scratch and avoid the need to compromise on design.

"I think we really made a mistake trying to derive the design for the Model X from the Model S platform," Musk said at the company's annual shareholder meeting.

The Model Y could enter production as early as late 2019, but it will first require a new factory.
