Toyota adding 86 TRD Special Edition for 2019?by Ronan Glon
No, it's not getting a turbo.
Before you ask: no, the Toyota 86 isn't getting a turbo. However, a new report suggests the Japanese firm will release a sportier variant of its handling-focused coupe named TRD Special Edition for the 2019 model year.
Positioned at the top of the 86 line-up, the TRD Special Edition will receive a number of performance-oriented add-ons like Brembo brakes, Sachs suspension components, an exhaust made by TRD, and 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped by Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. Website CarsDirect adds it will also receive a trim-specific three-piece spoiler and TRD graphics on both sides. Toyota hasn't released photos of the model, though.
There are no major mechanical modifications to report. The Special Edition model will carry on with the standard 86's 2.0-liter flat-four engine, a unit rated at 205 horsepower. It's the only trim level available exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.
The 2019 86 TRD Special Edition will cost $32,420 before Toyota adds a mandatory $920 destination charge. To add context, the Special Edition will cost about $6,000 more than a base 86 and command a $3,800 premium over a mid-level GT model.
Toyota hasn't commented on the report. If it's accurate, we'll learn official details about the car -- and see the first photos of it -- in the coming weeks.
