2016 Toyota Land Cruiser arrives with new styling, eight-speed gearbox

Toyota has announced its new-for-2016 Land Cruiser.

Toyota has unveiled the U.S.-spec version of its Land Cruiser SUV. The official United States unveiling follows the flagship SUV's world debut in Japan earlier this week.

The 2016 Land Cruiser arrives with all-new styling from the A-pillar forward. Styling changes include a new bumper, revised grille, LED headlights, a more sculpted hood and integrated headlight washers. Around back the 2016 Land Cruiser benefits from an updated bumper, LED taillights and a full-width chrome accent.

The interior design of the 2016 Land Cruiser isn't radically different from its predecessor, but includes a new-look steering wheel, revised center stack, a nine-inch JBL touchscreen audio system with Siri Eyes Free and a center console that now boasts a cooler box, USB port and cup holders. Rear seat passengers will enjoy a standard entertainment system with dual 10-inch screens.

More tech has also been added for 2016, including Frontal Collision Avoidance, Lane Departure Alert, Auto High Beams, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

Underhood the Land Cruiser's familiar 5.7L V8 returns, making 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. A brand new eight-speed auto replaces last year's six-speed automatic as the Land Cruiser's only available gearbox. Despite the addition of two gears, the EPA says the 2016 Land Cruiser will return the exact same mileage as before — 13mpg in the city and 18mpg on the highway.

Toyota will announce pricing for the 2016 Land Cruise closer to the SUV's on-sale date.
