Toyota Supra convertible possible

BMW wouldn't block Toyota from chopping off the Supra's roof.

In October, we reported that BMW hasn't fully ruled out turning the all-new Z4 roadster into a coupe. Industrial partner Toyota will build the next-generation Supra on the same platform as the Z4, and it's open to the idea of turning the model into a convertible.

"Of course we consider this," answered Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada when asked by Australian website CarSales about the possibility of making a convertible. He didn't confirm Toyota is actively developing the model, however.

His comments are interesting because they completely contradict an earlier report that claimed Toyota and BMW agreed not to overlap when they started developing the platform found under the Supra and the Z4. The former was supposed to be coupe-only, according to earlier reports, while the latter would exclusively come with a power-folding soft top.

Tada affirmed the reports were inaccurate. Toyota is free to take the Supra into convertible territory, and BMW can make the first Z4 coupe in years it if wants to. Time will tell whether either model will spawn a second body style. We'll learn more when the first Supra in over a decade makes its debut at the 2019 Detroit auto show.
