Due to a joint platform and production effort between Chrysler and Volkswagen for their minivans, VW has now joined Chrysler with a recall for a fire risk.

Earlier this week, Chrysler announced a 285,000 vehicle recall for its Town and Country and Dodge Caravan minivans over a fire hazard stemming from an improperly routed wire harness. Now, Volkswagen, which jointly produces its Routan minivan at Chrysler's Windsor, Ontario, plant.

VW has clarified that the recall for its Routan minivan affects only its 2009 model year vehicles, and that it will cover 15,902 units, according to an The Wallstreet Journal report.

The potential for fire stems from an improperly routed wire which can rub against metal, eventually exposing a wire that could cause a short circuit, and potentially start a fire.
