Volkswagen details 2019 Beetle Final Edition

by Byron Hurd

The "Final Edition" marks the end of the nameplate's run.

After 2019, the Volkswagen Beetle will be no more. 20 years after its triumphant return in 1999, VW's iconic coupe will exit the marketplace yet again.

To commemorate its two-decade revival, Volkswagen is sending it off with two bundle packages--Final Edition SE and Final Edition SEL--for buyers who want to take advantage of the final opportunity to buy a brand-new example.

The Final Edition SE gets standard chrome accents, body-colored side mirrors, heated washer nozzles, 17-inch wheels and a sunroof. Inside, it's optioned with keyless entry and push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, a gloss black center console, rhombus-pattern cloth seating surfaces and three-color ambient lighting.

Those who opt for the pricier SEL get unique 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery and navigation.

Final Edition models are available only in Safari Uni (which started life as Harvest Moon Beige on the original New Beetle) and Stonewashed Blue (recently featured on the Beetle Denim).

"The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle's many devoted fans," said Hinrich J. Woebcken, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., in the announcement.

"As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the U.S. and ramp up our electrification strategy with the MEB platform, there are no immediate plans to replace it. But as we have seen with the I.D. BUZZ--which is the modern and practical interpretation of the legendary Bus--I would also say, 'Never say never.'"
