Bugatti's upcoming supercar will be offered with a hybrid drivetrain.

Volkswagen Group's chief executive officer has confirmed that Bugatti's next supercar will be offered with a hybrid drivetrain. There has been no shortage of rumors involving Bugatti's planned followup to the Veyron supercar, but there has been little in the way of official specs from Bugatti parent VW. However, we now have our first bit of concrete news thanks to VW chairman Martin Winterkorn.

In a recent interview with Germany's Bild, Winterkorn confirmed that Bugatti's next model will offer a hybrid option. "There will be next to the petrol model for the first time, a version to improve performance with a hybrid drive," he said. Adding a hybrid drive to boost performance would follow similar moves by Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren.

Winterkorn's comments also seem to indicate that the next Bugatti supercar will be available in two flavors - gas and gas-electric. That means that the next Bugatti could follow the same performance blueprint as the Veyron, launching first with a less powerful drivetrain (in this case less powerful could mean a 16-cylinder engine with electric turbochargers and 1,500 horsepower) and then offering an up-rated drivetrain, like the one in the Veyron Super Sport, later in the car's life-cycle.

Winterkorn didn't mention when we might first lay eyes on Bugatti's Veyron follow-up, but it's possible we could see a concept version of the supercar by year's end. In all likelihood Bugatti's next supercar will land for the 2018 model year.
