The diesel-burning up! will make roughly 58 horsepower.
Ulrich Hackenberg, Volkswagen's chief of Research and Development, has confirmed that the automaker is currently developing a two-cylinder diesel engine that will be bolted in the engine bay of the up! city car next year.
The engine is essentially a 1.6-liter TDI four-cylinder that has been cut in half, giving it a displacement of roughly 800 cubic centimeters. More precise technical details were not given but rumors indicate that it will send roughly 58 horsepower and 88 lb-ft. of torque to the up!'s front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.
Since the diesel-burning twin is based on an existing and widely-used unit, it can easily be fitted to other cars that ride on Volkswagen's New Small Family platform, including the compact Polo hatchback and the hypothetical production version of the Taigun SUV that bowed earlier this week at the Sao Paulo Motor Show.
The diesel-burning up! will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next September but the two-cylinder diesel will be inaugurated by the XL1, an experimental and aerodynamic two-seater that is expected to bow as a limited edition model in Geneva. Since the XL1 is lighter than the up!, the twin will be de-tuned to roughly 40 horsepower.
