Volkswagen unveils 2007 Concept A crossover (Golf SUV?)

As anticipated, Volkswagen today unveiled a new SUV crossover called the 2007 Concept A at a press conference in Berlin. The concept car — on display at the Geneva Motor Show later this month — is the design basis for the 2007 Golf SUV, according to VW. The car has a coupe-like appearance, no b-pillar, and rear opposing suicide doors. Under the hood is a 150 horsepower TDI engine mated to a six-speed DSG transmission. Volkwagen acknowledged plans to build a Golf SUV today, and said it would be priced against the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. VW said the Concept A should be regarded as an indicator of where the design is headed. The production model will be less coupe-like, but similar in design language and proportions.

The front fascia and bold wheel arches are here to stay, but the production model will have a b-pillar for structural rigidity, and will have standard doors.

At 4,348 mm long and 1,854 mm wide, Concept A is 144 mm longer and 95 mm wider then the Golf Mk V. The height of Concept A is 1,551 mm, compared with 1,485 for the Golf; while its 2,602 mm wheelbase is 24 mm longer than the Golf’s.

At the rear, Concept A has a practical hatchback tailgate; but this is coupled to a pick-up style fold-down rear section beneath the rear LED light clusters. This hatch can be opened independently and remain open while driving so long loads can be carried.

  1. Sheesh volkswagen!! WHY?!!? Would it have been too easy to make a normal looking SUV? I really hope this concept has NOTHING to do with the Marrakesh.

  2. That’s pretty hideous, though a Golf “SUV” is nothing new. You could get a Golf in 4WD since around the mid-eighties.

  3. It looks like another puppy.
Modern, but unimpressive; like the stylishly unimpressive Passat.

  4. It looks good, butits noy going to be built like that. VW will water it down, like with the passat, and then spend half their budget on the taillights.

  6. I’d rather have an R32. That thing probably weighs considerably more than the already heavy R32.

  11. [...] The Tiguan (a combination of the words “tiger and “iguana) is based on the Concept A, and is officially deemed a “compact SUV. VW plans to release it in the 2008 model year. I have to say that I’m not crazy about the name (I personally dug “Nanuk, which is Eskimo for “small polar bear) but I love the idea of letting enthusiasts choose the name. Instead of releasing just another SUV, VW has generated a buzz among it’s loyalists. If that wasn’t enough, they also released a sketch: [...]
