The very first photos of the Volkswagen Tiguan were snapped by spy photographers this week. The car appears to be further along in the development process than one might expect. Codenamed VW416, the Tiguan is riding on a PL/PQ48 platform – a combination of the Golf/Rabbit and Passat platforms – one which will eventually be shared with Audi’s A4, A5 and Q5. In mid July, Volkswagen released the first official sketch of the Tiguan, which will arrive as a 2008 or 2009 model. Production will begin in Wolfsburg at the end of 2007, at the soonest. Gallery after the jump…

I’d say that it looks rather passive in it’s stance and not the aggressive position of the Tourag or its brethren. Not much differentiation between this and the Korean/Japanese competitors (CRV/RDX/Tucson). I’ve long thought VW / Audi led the way in defining their own shape / aggression through sheet metal and it appears to be missing in this. The flowing aggression of the sketch did not translate.
But I’m not going to trumpet a “it’s not from the General so it’s not good” stance… not one of the GM team members on this end.

I can’t believe that VW placed the exact same dash from the Golf Plus… Those small rounded air vents don’t look good in my opinion. I was expecting more of a Touareg dash.
This reveals that VW is using the same dash (and steering wheel) from the Golf Plus as a cost-cutting measure.

It seems like every company is building a very specific car to fit a niche that may or may not exist these days. It also seems like VAG is going down the same road GM one went, building tons of niche models and then sharing them accross the brands. While I think VAG will do a better job of hidding that fact between their brands, as they already have, it just seems a bit too familiar to me.

I haven’t seen a single of these premium compact SUV’s that I’ve liked. From the X3 to the Tiguan, they all seem to suffer from the same jaunty proportions. None of them seem to be able to transfer their brand’s cues successfully into a compelling design.

I had an Equinox last week from Avis (weekly renter and I like the Lucerne quite a bit and the DTS is always a great driving car). The Equinox was the biggest POS I’ve driven in a long time (my boss and I were actually laughing at the shifting/console center stack). One single cup holder, low cost IP materials, and although trivial, the window switches (in the console to save money I guess rather than on each door of the front seats) were demarcated by what looked like the “front left burner, back left burner, etc) icons of my gas stove.
very underimpressed by the Equinox although from the outside, the Torrent looks considerably better.

I think I am one of the few that will actually wait until I see the model with no disquises, etc before making some ugly/fugly remark. The purpose of the disquise is to hide and in some cases alter the true look of the vehicle. I’m sure once the front and rear are seen it will look quite a bit different. Knowing VW it will start in the low 20’s and max out around 30K.

It’s a shame Volkswagen can’t build cars that bear more than a vague resemblence to their sketches. The sketch for the Golf also looked promising but they just can’t (or won’t) deliver on vision their designers put on paper.

VW should bring back the old, reliable breadloaf VW bus (’72-’79). Put a modern VW diesel engine in it, along with better insulation and soundproofing, good heating & AC. They’d sell millions.

Typically I like to wait to judge a cars looks until I actually see one in person. But VW’s reputation goes before it in such a way that this design underwhelms. Though disguised, you can tell that there is nothing really ground breaking. not a crime against car design, but now worthy of an award either.

For all those who would like to see the monarchy skip Charles and go to the eldest son, there is ample evidence that William wants anything but.William refuses public appearances without his dad, refused to host his own birthday party, and has asked the Queen to delay handing him formal titles so he may remain as ‘William Wales’.Will has an aversion to the media bordering on pathological. He walked into a bar with his socks to mock strict regulations.HE SHOPS FOR HIS OWN GROCERIES AT TESCO while attending University at St Andrews.Charles has told him he is the laziest person on earth.William likes his space and freedom and relaxes in crumpled shirts and sweaters with holes in them.He like hanging out with his friends, talking, drinking, and “whatever”.Wills views himself as a “country boy” at heart (to the chagrin of Diana). Also he has bemoaned to his friends “why would anyone want him?”My guess would be that a lot of people have gaping-maw holes in their personalities that require bolstering.
