The entire automotive landscape is turning into niche markets. It is one of the advantages of platform sharing, so out of the Nissan FM platform you get a “pure sports car in the 350Z, a sports sedan in the G35, and a Sport-Ute in a FX. The same holds true in Mercedes, or any other manufacturer. There is a market for this vehicle, the same as there is for the C-Class, the B-Class, The E-Class, and even the new Chevy Malibu.

This fills the gap in the market between CL/S-Class and teh Maybachs.
Volumes will be small, enough to steal a few sales from Bentley. M-B gets to test the technology before releasing it in a Maybach.

I love many-spoked things, guess im old school. I wish the LED’s were not as visible as they are there. Overall, looks like Mercedes has some good direction.

Honestly, it doesnt look nearly as ugly as the last Photoshop. WHY? The styling cues on this one actually looks much more like a 4-door stretched convertible CL than an S-class Cab. Look at the Fenders missing the obnoxious bulges that never looked right to begin with on the S. Look at the front headlamps and the rear light clusters - all much more like the new CL than the S. And then the rear treatment looks almost copied straight from the Bentley GTC. Overall, a stretched CL Cab

Only thing still looking poor is the soft-top - even on these pics you can see the Ribs of the support for them and it reminds me of an old Chrysler Lebaron Convert - a giant retracting hard-top like the SL would look better but would probably be an engineering nightmare…

A hard top convertible with that length of roof would one day collapse on its occupants. It would do more damage than the A-Class failing the Moose Test.
