General Motors redesigned the popular Cadillac CTS for 2008. An all-new version of its popular midsize sedan, the 2008 CTS was on display at the 2007 Detroit auto show. The car has earned many awards and remains the sole Cadillac model that can be had with a traditional manual transmission.
The new model is wider and longer than its predecessor, with its 113-inch wheelbase the only unchanged measurement. Some of the most noticeable changes come to the interior, which GM promises will be extremely competitive with European rivals. An 8-speaker sound system tuned by Bose is standard equipment on all CTS trims.
The base model features a 3.6-liter variable-valve-timing V6 with 263 horsepower. A direct-injection version offers 304 horsepower. The transmissions each got an extra cog, now either six-speed manual or automatics replacing the five-speed units of the previous generation car. Standard wheels on either model are 17 inches in diameter. Top speed is artificially limited to 135mph in the base car, while the direct-injected version gets a 155mph limiter.
GM is expected to introduce a high-performance CTS-V for the 2009 model year at a later date but until then, enthusiasts might be disappointed to learn the more powerful engine can't be had with the manual transmission. A performance package is available on the 304hp CTS and includes bigger, 18-inch wheels, a limited slip differential, summer-only tires, and upgraded brake, suspension and cooling systems. The package does cost a heady $8,200.
Unlike its predecessor, the 2008 CTS is offered with all-wheel-drive instead of just rear-wheel drive. Some suspension, braking, and steering improvements from last year's CTS-V have been added to the standard CTS. Optional features include iPod integration, a 40GB hard drive for the entertainment system, swiveling headlights, a sunroof and a remote start system. They are available either as standalone options or part of a package.
