BMW today revealed the M5 Touring — a wagon version of its popular M5 sports car. The second-ever “M” station wagon, the 2008 M5 Touring delivers 507 horsepower at 8,250rpm from a 5.0 liter V10 engine, all while providing up to 1,650 litres of cargo space. The M5 Touring will be offered in select European markets, including the U.K., but it’s unclear if it will ever come to American shores.
The M5 Touring shares a virtually identical feature list with its sedan counterpart, including a seven-speed sequential-manual transmission, high-performance wheels and tires, quad exhaust, and a driver-oriented interior. The M5 Touring accelerates to 60 mph just 0.1 seconds slower than the M5 sedan. Without the 155mph electronic limiter the new M5 Touring would be capable of achieving 200mph. That is a $60k wagon waiting to be birthed, count on it. Just a wee bit of a price difference between this and an SRT-8.
Yes, the M5 Touring is a better wagon. For that money, it should be.

Why would anyone buy this over a sedan, SUV or crossover? There is still a negative stigma attached to any car that looks like a station wagon. The M5 SEDAN rocks….the M5 Touring (station wagon) just doesn’t do it for me.

Why? It looks better with the M6 wheels, though.

I agree with A4. No compromise in your driving, yet you get all the cargo space of an SUV.

actually, a lot of time wagons make total sense.
If you own a dog, no question.
I like cargo space, but don’t care for vehicles that ride high or drive like trucks. A sporty RWD or AWD wagon, for me, would be ideal.
Although I would never buy one with a V10. A wagon is a transport vehicle… give it a nicely tuned V6 or turbo 4 and we’re good to go.

Can you think of any other remotely affordable sport wagons out there? I can only think of the Mazda6, Audi A4 and perhaps the V40 (or is it V50?) Granted, I don’t have a family, but when carting around bikes and other gear all the time, it would be great to have a sporty estate.
What others are I forgetting?

There is such a thing as the E63 AMG wagon. Before that there was the E55 wagon…
I think the E wagon looks better from the side, but this still looks good.

The taillights are quite different to the sedan. Much nicer than i would have expected, the kids in the backseat will go flying.

Back to the drawing board guys, This thing is a loser. What the public really wants is a Cadillac wagon with a REAL ENGINE like the Northstar or an LS motor. And they want quality, something that BMW lacks. Now those would sell. This is going to be dropped in about 6 months due to lack of interest.

I thought they’d only built a couple of AMG stationwagons, to be used as F1 safety cars?
This is a seriously hot car. It’s a shame that Audi hasn’t brought the RS Avants to the US, and hopefully BMW won’t make the same mistake.
