Buick dealers reject RWD sedan plans

General Motors management reportedly asked Buick dealers if they'd like a large rear-wheel-drive sedan based on the Holden Statesman that will be sold in China next year. Their response? "Thanks - but no, thanks," according to Automotive News.

Why would an American luxury car maker reject adding a modern rear-drive four-door to its lineup? Dealers think such a vehicle would cannibalize sales of the front-wheel-drive Lucerne.

"It was firmly in the U.S. product program" until the car was shown to Buick dealers, product boss Bob Lutz said. He said the door is still open if dealers want to reconsider.
