Boring Co shows modified Model X in test tunnel [Video]

The Model X appears to serve as a placeholder for the electric \'skate\' that will be used to carry passengers or cars through the tunnels.

Elon Musk's Boring Company has released a video of a tunnel test run using a modified Model X.

The electric crossover appears to have been outfitted with alignment wheels, which keep the vehicle centered in the tunnel as it moves at high speed.

Rails are also visible but are only apparently used for removing tunneling spoils, rather than serving as a light rail for transportation pods.

The tunnel cross-section will have several 'shelves' to accommodate each electric skate's tires and vertical curbs to make contact with horizontally mounted alignment wheels. The controlled autonomous skate will support speeds of 125-150 mph in urban settings.

The video shows a test in the short test tunnel beneath Hawthorne, which will soon be part of a proposed 2.7-mile proof-of-concept tunnel beneath Los Angeles. The latter project still awaits final permitting approvals.
