To say that Chevrolet’s Cruze has been a long time coming is certainly an understatement. Unveiled in world market form over a year ago, the North American model finally made its debut today at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The new Cruze is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged Ecotec four-cylinder and a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with a choice of six-speed automatic or manual transmissions. The turbocharged engine puts out 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft. of torque and should be capable of up to 40 mpg on the highway, GM says. The 1.8-liter puts out 136 horsepower and 123 lb-ft. of torque.
The Cruze will be offered in three trim levels, LS, LT and LTZ, the latter two of which will come standard with the turbo motor.
Safety will be a priority in the new Cruze, GM says. Ten airbags will come as standard, including the rear seat side airbags and knee airbags. Stability control and ABS will be standard across the lineup, although rear disc brakes remain an option. The Cruze will come standard with 16-inch wheels, although 17 and 18 inchers will also be available.
Outside, the Cruze takes styling cues from the new Malibu, and promises to be a much sharper car than the current Cobalt. Chief designer Taewan Kim says that the new Cruze’s design is meant to be “bold, not evolutionary. We wanted to take a big step forward, making a strong design statement for Chevrolet products around the world.”
The car hit the European market in March, but U.S. production at the Lordstown, Ohio, plant, where the Cobalt is currently made will begin in June 2010.
Although there is widespread speculation that the Cruze will eventually replace the Cobalt, it still remains possible that both cars could coexist within GM’s lineup. In fact, Chevrolet’s North American head, Ed Peper, says the Cruze is actually intended to create a new segment that slots above the Cobalt but below the Malibu. Seeing the car in person confirms the Cruze could fill that hole in Chevy’s lineup as it is actually bigger than it looks in pictures.
Based on what was once called the Delta 2 platform, the all-new Cruze rides on GM’s Global Compact Vehicle Architecture. The primary engineering and development will come from GMDAT — General Motor’s Korean partner (although there has been strong input from the North American and European planning groups).

I have a Cruze and I can tell you its a very impressive little car. its actually not that “little” as there is plenty of accommodation and the interior is fantastic. I’d go as far as to say the Interior is up their with the best of the Europeans for Design and feel. The quality is tight and the car comes loaded with toys and equipment. It also illuminates beautifully at night.
It drives very sweetly with a snappy little gearbox and smooth controlled steering. The Delta platform feels very sophisticated and its obvious the car could handle a high performance varient. On the down side the car is not that quick, but it WILL move if you give it some stick. I have the 1.8 engine and for all intents and purposes the 1.4 turbo would be the one to have or even better…the diesel if its available in your market. The upside of the leisurly performance is the Cruze is quiet and refined and has exceptional economy.
But for me the best thing about it is the feeling of safety. Its the second highest rated small car in the Euro Ncap test, even beating the latest Renault Megane and other highly rated Euro hatches in the test. Its a comforting feeling that the Cruze feels secure and is built to stand up to some serious abuse. Anyone steping from a Cobalt or even an Astra into this will certainly feel a move upmarket.
I can honestly say its a great little car. Its no fire rocket but it feels solidly made and refined and when was the last time you could say that about a GM vehicle in this segment?

Gas mileage is really good…not sure what it is in MPG cos we rate ours in litres per 100km…but $60AUS dollars fills the tanks and it lasts me 2 weeks..Which I think at current exchange rates is about $50 US. ..And our gas is a fair bit more expensive than USA…..so I would expect it to be very cheap to run in most US states. Its certainly more economical than the Astra I had previously ut slower..which is understandable given the safety equipment on board.
The Cruze for Euro and Aus is made in Korea, but I eblieve Australia will be building their own in a years time and China already builds theirs I think. It really is a world effort and sits on the same brand new platform as the all new Opel Astra, so in essence its really nothing like the previous Daewoo/CHevy Europe products of before…If anything, its more Euro/German than Korean.

I drive a colbalt recently… it was horrible. The glove box felt like it was gonna fall off by me closing it. BUT I hope GM has learned from their mistakes from caliber and colbalt based on their excellent looking interior pictures, I have high expectations for this car. Looks like a mini malibu.
The 1.8L is unnecessary when there is a 1.4 Turbo.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DIESEL VERSION??? This is why GM is bankrupt. This car IS A SELLER if they had an diesel. Just look at the success at Jetta TDi.
GM has made some excellent cars but still has some minor problems, if GM continues to improve their cars, their cars might actually be pretty decent.

The great aspect about the LA Convention Center exhibit halls is that you can avoid GM’s section altogether. In other words, you can Cruze right by these eyesores completely. What a slap in taxpayers’ faces having both GM and Chrysler use taxpayer money to pay for these exhibits. Porsche typically has the best exhibit in regard to presentation; a must-see even if you are not into Porsches.

Be interesting to see how it goes in the annual Wheels Magazine car of the year this year. I don’t understand why the Cruze is being released with both a 1.4 liter turbo and the 1.8 if they have roughly the same power output. In fact the larger displacement 1.8 is worse off. Why isn’t this thing class leading? A base 2.5 Rabbit/Golf is packing 177 horses and an off-putting Scion wades into battle with 158 ponies. Turn up the boost GM honestly…

Consumer Reports Take on the new Cruze:
“It’s the most significant car of the show,” said Jake Fisher, senior auto engineer for Consumer Reports, shortly after the car was introduced Wednesday.
The new compact car towers over other vehicles displayed at the show because it provides cutting-edge technology and design in a high-volume vehicle that people will be able to afford, Fisher said.
Quite simply, the Cruze gives GM a good chance to compete in small cars, he said. The car promises better fuel economy and has more space than Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic.
“This is a big step forward for General Motors and for small cars,” he said.

I saw this car at the LA Auto Show. I also saw Ford’s new Fiesta. The Ford booth was packed and had lots and lots of people looking at the Fiesta and all the hype that Ford was throwing at it. Over at the Chevy booth, there were two lonely Cruze’s sitting at the front of the Chevy area. One was on a turntable and the other had ropes around it. There was a simple little “CRUZE” sign on the ground. Both times I walked by, absolutely nobody was looking at the cars. This showing symbolized everything that is wrong with GM. Boring cars marketed by out-of-date out-of-touch faceless people that have no clue how to market a product in this century.
This is the most important car that GM is introducing at the LA Auto Show. Chevy’s marketing should be taken into the snow in Detroit, lined up, and shot. Chevy’s presence at the LA Auto Show is a total disaster. If this is the new Chevy, then GM is doomed!!!!!!! Somehow, I am guessing that this is the reason Fritz Henderson was fired last week. Chairman Whitacre probably saw what I saw and realized that change was needed and needed quickly.

Shame the there’s no coupe version of the Cruze, it’ll leave a big void in the subcompact market left open for the Corolla, Civic, and tC (I’ll throw the Focus coupe a bone too). Regardless, I’m impressed with most of the design elements of the Cruze. I’m glad GM designed the front end to have contrast between the hood and windshield lines, very anti-Civic with it’s pinched front end. The rear, while not hideous, is kinda Hyundai-hum-drum-daily-driving-sedan-esque. Kind of bland, but that’s apparently what the market wants.

I have seen the Australian Cruz while vacationing there. The Cruz stands out and is nicely styled. It has an upmarket look to it so don’t agree with those who feel it is plain hum drum styling. My biggest questions to GM is why don’t you bring the diesel engine to our market?? I think it would sell like hot cakes. Same goes for Ford, they have a 2.5 litre diesel engine Ford Ranger that would outsell the North American Ranger and give the Tacoma and Frontier a run for their money. Totally bizarre to me why the North American market seems to have their heads up their butt. The Fiesta and Cruz are all over the roads here in Australia, I think GM and Ford could use these vehicles in North America sooner rather than later.

The cruise is a nice looking car – better looking than the competition. I’ve always owned GM products and have been very pleased with them. I know people make fun of the Cavalier but I put 140,000 trouble fee miles on it (sold it to a family member 2 yrs ago and still no problems) Purchased a Cobalt coupe which is even a better car. Smooth ride, quiet and I am averaging 34 mpg combined mileage. The only problem I have with the Cruze is that there is no coupe. All of the compact 4 doors look like clown cars, especially the Sentra and Corolla. At least the coupe gives a small car a little bit of style. I’ll take style over convenience any day. Obviously you are limited to certain design elements on a short car compared to a full size. You have more mass and metal to be creative with. When you look at the complete line of compacts on the market, you really gotta look to see what brand is what. Just make a coupe!

As a GM enthusiast, but without my head completely in the clouds, I’d say the best cars in the value-priced field are all Hyundai. I would love to see the Cruze being a respectable, competent compact car. I’m glad they used the new signature Chevrolet front end look, so the car LOOKS good to me.
The fit and finish of the current Malibu bode well for new Chevy’s (Chevies? Chevys? Chevrolets. There. That’s better.) The current Daewoo, I mean Aveo, is cute but absolutely awful by almost everyone’s measurement.
GM’s current four cylinder engines are smooth. Remember the ones from not so long ago? They all sounded like tractors! It was the main reason that I wondered if GM would ever build a good small car.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
