Though it was only sold in limited quantities over a handful of sporadic years in North America, Land Rover’s Defender – a direct descendant of the first 1948 Land Rover – continues to thrive in many markets across the world. The distinctly dated workhorse will give way to a thoroughly modernized variant reportedly codenamed Project Icon for the 2012 model year
Based heavily on the T5 steel platform chassis currently used in the Range Rover Sport and LR4, according to Britain’s Autocar, the Project Icon replacement will be capable of meeting the ever-stricter emissions and safety laws that have spelled doom for the Defender as U.S. laws outlawed the sale of new Defenders beginning in 1997 due to the lack of airbags.
The chassis will allow the next-generation rig to be offered in a multitude of bodystyles, including hard and soft top variants and a utilitarian pickup style.
Expect the LR4’s 195 horsepower 2.7-liter diesel V6, which isn’t offered in North America, to be the standard powertrain in the next-generation Defender for global markets. If the model is earmarked for North American consumption, the advanced 5.0-liter V8 developed with Jaguar used in the LR4 and Range Rover Sport seems like a match made in heaven.

I must admit when I was a kid, I dreamed of owning a Land Rover Defender. Kind of strange I know, but they are pretty cool rigs. As the ‘article’ states they are rare (and far too expensive) here in the States.

I hope it’s tougher than only being able to drive to the cottage and back or into the city from the suburbs. But this is my fav Land Rover model because it has traditionally been pretty tough, but we’ll see with the new ownership……
It’s also nice to see that another diesel engine won’t be offered in North America.

Secondly, why in the “Internet Car and Truck of the Year” article are comments prohibited/blocked? I would have told LLN that their link is INCORRECT. The website is http://internetcarandtruckoftheyear.com/
I would have then said:
In my opinion
Car of Year should go to Chevy Camaro SS or Ford Taurus SHO (both radically new models, highly anticipated, which are both receiving great reviews and have the looks and performance to back up the hype)
Truck of the Year: Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. The only real truck on the list, and a very badass one at that. I’d put the Ford Transit Connect as a very distant second.

Land Rover Defenders are awesome vehicles, however they are straying from the icon that they are.
The latest Top Gear magazine has a whole article about how it is becoming filled with too much luxury and urban characteristics which detract from what the Land Rover icon should be. The goal of this vehicle should be ultimate off-road ability, while maintaining quality, at the lowest price point possible. (And it should come to NA with a diesel, please.)

05Z88Path, yeah but there is also a list of cars to vote on, so I think there’s actually 2 sites. Clarity is lacking that article. Also, how can crossovers been considered trucks? Audi doesn’t make trucks! And the Ford Transit Connect is a friggin’ minivan!!! WTF!!!

Awesome Defender news. Still see quite a few old yellow ones running around Colorado especially while doing some off-roading. Nice to see one LR vehicle that isn’t just driven to the shopping center parking lot

Just to stop anymore confusion. The tiny picture next to the article is most likely NOT what the 2012 model will look like. That is the 2008 Land Rover Defender SVX. LLN should really state these things for people who do not know and start thinking the wrong thing. More pics of the 2008 SVX can be found at: http://www.seriouswheels.com/cars/2008/top-2008-Land-Rover-Defender-SVX.htm

I always liked these things. They have held their value INCREDIBLY. They are still now, 12 years later, selling for 100% of their purchase price. The only value lost is that of inflation and purchasing power.
If they can come out with a new one and not have it be so expensive, I think it would be great. They would be equivelant to about $60,000 today. For a Land Roverized Jeep Wrangler is A LOT of jack. Keep it under $40,000 and it will be a nice ride.
I like what I see from Land Rover (TATA) these days.

Defenders are very cool cars, the only drawbacks are the cramped interiors and very uncomfortable seats. If they can fix that and bring it back to USA I would think about getting one.
I also hope for a diesel version and better mileage.

So far so good. It had the profile of the Mercedes G-wagon. Im sure it will have the same success that the G-wagon did (total sarcasm). But Im sure it will find its niche in the states

The defender is the coolest LR period. You do still see a number of old 90’s trailrunning in Colorado. Keep the classic look, a 5 or 6 speed manual, and ditch the heated 3rd row, the wipers on the headlights and all of the other “luxurious” features…or at least make it optional to buy a stripped down version. Glad to see it returning to the states.

Just today I saw one near the produce market in Barcelona: an old one with 4 cylinder diesel. It may not not win any races, but it looked good for its 25 plus years (this particular one). Owner did not complain about any problems.

Agreed leftwing,
The Defender like the Mercedes G class are pretty cool, but the sticker price is just too much. It’s sucks to be not that rich!

SUV’s with diesel engines should be offered. They would sell for the MPG’s and the longevity of the engine. I would buy one and i’m sure allot more would consider it.

It just need a better and comfortable interior, not luxury, but not cheap.
I go off road a lot in my Pajero 3500 GDI and with the group comes a Defender, I always thought it was brilliant until I sat in it. It’s simply absurdly cheap, feeling not price, that is.

I’ve always wanted a D90 or a D110, but as stated already, they are ridonkulously expensive here. Like 1/2 a dozen Jeep Wranglers too expensive.
Case in Point: Take a trip to the island of Nantucket sometime, you will see more D90s than you’ve seen total in your life (at least if you live in NA). You will also see more completely restored CJ7 & CJ8s too, and probably more Cayenne’s too. These poor little vehicles are used 3X a year and stored on island the rest.
Anyway, I’m VERY excited for this, and would like to see the oil burner stateside please. Then again, Diesel is about $6 on ACK, so maybe they won’t sell too many here.
