Mercedes-AMG Project One aims to set new Nurburgring record

The company is apparently confident it can beat a 1983 record of 6min 11sec, set by a Porsche 956.

Mercedes-AMG is preparing to set a new Nurburgring record with the Project One, aiming to set a new all-time record for street and race cars alike.

The fastest lap dates back to 1983, when the late German racer Stefan Bellof launched a Porsche 956 around the recently shortened 12.9-mile Nordschleife in just 6min 11sec to qualify for the Nurburgring 1000km.

Mercedes-AMG head Tobias Moers suggests it is "reasonable to speculate" the Project One will be even faster, though the company will be careful to "find the right driver," according to an Autocar report.

The flagship hypercar is expected to deliver more than 1,000 horsepower, while aerodynamic provisions create downforce levels equivalent to around half the car's ~3,000-pound curb weight.

The company has not yet confirmed when it will attempt to set a new record, though the team is presumably keeping an eye on the weather as engineers continue to push forward with development.
