Tesla, SpaceX delete Facebook accounts

Musk still believes Facebook-owned Instagram is \"probably ok ... so long as it stays fairly independent.\"

Elon Musk has decided to delete Facebook accounts of Tesla and SpaceX amid the ongoing '#deletefacebook' movement.

Responding to a Twitter user challenging Musk to delete SpaceX's Facebook account, the executive claimed he "didn't even realize" his companies had a Facebook presence and promised to delete the accounts.

Facebook is under fire for apparently failing to prevent user data from being acquired by Cambridge Analytica, the controversial political consultancy firm that is credited with helping President Donald Trump use social media to win the 2016 presidential election.

Musk has maintained a much heavier presence on Twitter and Instagram, which is wholly owned by Facebook. The executive appears reluctant to extend his protest to deleting Instagram.

"Instagram's probably ok imo, so long as it stays fairly independent," he added. "I don't use FB & never have, so don't think I'm some kind of martyr or my companies are taking a huge blow. Also, we don't advertise or pay for endorsements, so … don't care."
