Volkswagen shows ID R electric Pikes Peak contender

Volkswagen last entered the hill-climb with a dual-engine Golf more than three decades ago.

Volkswagen has released a few full renderings of its all-electric Pikes Peak racer.

Known as the ID R, the purpose-built car will borrow technology from VW Group's MEB modular electric platform architecture, helping the company promote the newly formed ID sub-brand that will distinguish its upcoming onslaught of electric vehicles.

The German automaker's last Pikes Peak entry dates back to 1987, when a Golf tackled the climb to 14,115 feet with dual engines and 652 horsepower.

"It is about time we settled the score," says VW motorsport director Sven Meets.

The company is hoping to beat Rhys Millen's electric prototype class record of 8 minutes 57 seconds.
